Why therapy in your mother tongue?

Some feelings only find their full meaning in our own language

Even if you speak the language of the country you live in very well, Turkish often feels more natural when describing your inner world. Therapy in your mother tongue is not a replacement for mental health services in the country you live in; it is an additional option that may suit you alongside them.

Emotions speak in the mother tongue

Childhood memories, family relationships and our most intense emotions are mostly encoded in the first language we learn. When we speak in a second language, emotions can feel distant and words can fall short; in your mother tongue, that distance narrows.

Not having to explain your culture

“That’s shameful”, “what will people say”, hosting visits, festive holidays, extended-family expectations, homesickness… Being understood without having to explain each of these can help the therapeutic relationship form more quickly.

A bridge between two cultures

When you feel caught between the norms of the country you live in and your family’s values, a perspective that respects both worlds and does not judge is important.

Science-based approach

Sessions are structured and goal-oriented, within the framework of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), whose effectiveness has been demonstrated by research.

Who is it for?

Young people and adults growing up with the feeling of belonging “neither here nor there”, and with questions of identity and belonging.

Students and academics

Students studying abroad, and academics going through doctoral and research processes.

This depends on the rules of the country you live in and of your insurance company. I recommend checking with your insurer in advance whether online sessions with a psychologist based abroad are covered.

Research shows that cognitive behavioural therapy delivered online can achieve results close to those of face-to-face sessions for many issues, such as anxiety and depression. Even so, the most suitable method for each person and situation is assessed together in the initial consultation.

Online therapy is not an emergency service. In emergencies such as a risk of harm to yourself or others, call the emergency number of the country you are in (112 in EU countries, 911 in the USA and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia) or go to the nearest emergency department.
